Gift Card Fraud

This happened to me twice before with Canadian Tire gift cards purchased at Shoppers. This was before they switched over to the more secure ones where you have to peel open the tab to get the magnetic strip. In any case, after that change I haven't had any other problems, but nowadays when I buy any gift card I always check their security level to ensure they weren't the "bare" cards like the old CT cards. Those were too easy to copy for scammers!

I spoke too early. Two of my CT cards found compromised few days ago. They were again purchased at shoppers.

I had a fraudulent CT card issue a few weeks ago from Loblaws with the new secure packaging. Somebody cut the side open and had a small piece of paper inserted with a different card activation barcode on it. Luckily, I found it right away when I got home, and I called CT customer service immediately. I actually just received a replacement card in the mail today. They didn’t even ask for a scan of the card or the receipt.

I have no idea how mine was compromised, back then I don't think I knew about this paper slip trick, so who knows. In any case hopefully they replace my card, haven't heard from them yet...
