I fully agree with your new approach. Due to the nature of NBA Props (many star players may be ruled out just 30 minutes or less before tip-off), there is quite a bit of variance, so it's better to zone in on a few strong value plays to improve your ROI, rather than spreading yourself too thin across the board.
