Phil Ivey sues Crockford's

Post by ProlinePlayer » Wed May 08, 2013 7:36 am

This story started about 8 months back with Phil Ivey hitting Crockford's (London) for about 8 million pounds. Only problem is they are stalling on paying the money and now Ivey has finally launched a law suit.

http://www.pokernews.com/news/2013/05/b ... -14945.htm

This is a strange story which has never made much sense to me.
I was under the impression that casinos in England were very heavily regulated by the government.

Crockford's seems to be suggesting (although they don't say it) that Ivey has done something illegal. It would seem to be that one of two things should have happened almost immediately when this story first started.

either
a) Crockford's have proof of Ivey's cheating which they have presented to the regulatory commission who have now issued a warrant for Ivey's arrest.
b) failing the above the commission should have ordered that they paid immediately and upon failing to do so suspended their casino license and shut down their operation.

I can't understand how there can be any kind of middle ground which leads to Ivey being required to file a lawsuit for the money?

More details to the story here. Look like Phil and his companion (interesting to know she has banned from 2 other casinos) exploited a card defect.

Nothing has been proven at this point so I am sure we will continue to follow this story with great interest.

Here's another article which explains how 'Playing the turn' works.

and another article on 'edge sorting' here

It is interesting that the first link is from the web site of a what is more or less a casino security consultants company and that the article is several years old.

On a related note, Borgara filed a federal lawsuit against Phil

Yes I saw that :D

One really does have to wonder exactly how stupid (greedy) are these casinos?
This scam has apparently been around for years - that anyone would fall for it is to me almost beyond belief.

Note that the win at the Borgata occurred well after Ivy's $14 million win at Crockfords!
Apparently after 3 days and almost $9 million the Borgata got a little worried. At this point they figured out what Ivy was doing by doing an internet search and finding the articles on Ivy's win/dispute with Corckfords. :!: :!: They confronted him with the information and I don't know how he managed this but they then agreed to continue ?!?!?!. It was only after losing another $800,000 on day 4 that they decided to end the game?!?!?!

A couple of more links on this ...

The second one includes another explanation of how this works.
